Airman by Eoin Colfer

  1. Airman is a book full of suspense. The story timing was before Wright brother’s air-plane invention. At the beginning it seems nothing can go wrong and then all of the sudden you will go through sadness. The whole book is pretty sad. Finally when you think that nothing will go right, a happy ending comes. I thought this book was fantastic! It was very well written and the plot took the reader on a ride. The plot was suspenseful and twisting. I would rate this book 8 out of 10.

  2. Airman
Airman is about a little boy named Conor who lived in a castle, on a remote diamond island. It was the age of discovery, and he, with his teacher, were on the way to discovering motor-power flight. But his fairy-tale existence ends with bullets to his teacher and his king. From the good island of Great Saltee he is sent to Little Saltee, a prison and diamond mine.
Airman has a little something for everyone. It has adventure, bullets, explosions and swords, even in the first chapter. It has survival when Conor must survive inhumane conditions in Little Saltee. It has a tint of sci fi, even if the technology is still behind. The politics of betrayal, bribery, assassination, blackmail are all there. The drama of Conor‘s parents trying to recover from his “death”. Heck, it even has romance and princesses in castles, though this princess happens to know fencing. One of those elements is always in play, with humour mixed in too. While the king’s tower is burning, what is the king thinking about? Being found covered in sewage. What is the gangster paid to beat up Conor worried about? He’s worried about finding grease for his hair.
My favourite character is Linus, the blind man who plays the piano. He is an essential support character, and his arguments and conversation with Conor is funny. If Conor says “I need a better propeller,” then Linus replies, “Should I use a flute for this section, or a piccolo?” Conor responds with “I think I need a new shape” and so on. If they made a movie out of Airman, and I only saw the parts involving Linus, I would be laughing my head off!
I would recommend this book to anyone who can read it, especially those who like funny books. I rate this book a ten out of ten.
