Book of a Thousand Days by Shannon Hale

  1. I really liked this book because it's so different from the other books that I have read by Shannon Hale. Shannon Hale's novels are usually based on fairy tales.

The setting was in a place based on modern-day Mongolia. It was very interesting to read a story that is so different from other fairy tales that I have read. Other thing that makes this story is the perspective that the story is told from. Instead of the main character being the Lady Saren, the main character is her maid, Dashti. The format of this story is rather interesting.

The tittle of this book is so perfect for this story. This story is told in Dashti's diary. She promised herself that she would write in everyday. Her mother told her that you will truely know a person only after you have known them for a thousand days. Dashti is too brave and loyal and does some stupid things.
This book is very good. I recommend it to anyone who likes or used to like fairy tales and would like to read an new one.

  2. Book of a Thousand Days was based on Maid Maileen... or whatever it's called. It was the 2nd book by Shannon Hale I read, the first being Goose Girl. Or was it the other way around? Either way, I enjoyed both.

Book of a Thousand Days was, like the other books by Shannon Hale, a bit mature. But instead of being a normal book, it was written in diary format. It's supposed to be Maid Dashti's diary/journal, which was something she promised to write inside of every day. She can't, since she and Lady Saren are locked up in a tower for 7 years (they don't make it, though) and has to tend to her lady's needs. They escape from the tower, and she starts all over again. I lost count of the days she's written in the book after 17, so I was uncertain whether she wrote in it for 1000 days or not.

This book definately earns at least a 3.5 out of 5. Minus 1 because of all the killing, and minus .5 because it scared me with the scary maturity.

Overall, it was a good book.

  4. I really loved this story. It was amazing and so different from other books that I've read. This is my first time reading a book from Shannon Hales and I would rate... a 5 stars! It was written like a dairy that Dashti, the mucker maid, has promised to write in everyday. It shows her point of view, her perspective instead of Lady Saren's. Love it.
The title fits this book perfectly and i still can't believe, I know I'm spoiling it but, I still can't believe she wedded Khan... T something. Anyways I posted this a bit late after reading the book but when you read it you can really picture in your head what's happening.
    It's actually pretty fun.
Dashti is a pretty dumb mucker maid because, well, she would do anything for her lady, anything, even though it is not the right thing to do. And to answer Jelli's question it is definitely a thousand days. I didn't count exactly but i think its maybe more than a thousand day...?
Anyways this book is really good and I would recommend this to everyone.

  5. In my perspective this book was truly captivating. Each of the characters were very different from eachother.

Like Dashti is a mucker maid who obeys Lady Saren. She likes to right in her book everyday. She likes to Sing healing songs when people are depressed or when their sick or injured. She is also very honest aswell.

Lady Saren is the daughter of the King of Titors Garden. He along with everyone else died in titors garden because of Khasar and his army.Lady Saren was always abandoned by her mucker maids but Dashti was the one who she needed.

Khan Tegus was the king of Song for Evela. He and Lady Saren were very close. They would right letters to eachother. But the problem was that Lady Saren didnt like him very much anymore and she didnt want to talk to him or see him so she made Dashti do that job.Dashti didnt want to but she had to obey her. That was when this story had a bit of a problem at the end when they knew who Dashti really was.

Anyways,I give this book 4 stars because this book had a bit too much of killing and violence and it was a was a bit emotional. The good thing was that it was powerful and it had alot of meaning to it i liked the characters too.I recommend this book to people who like books that have abit of violence and a higher level of maturity.

  6. Book of a Thousand Days was an okay book. It was so interesting from the other books that I read. It was about a mucker maid name Dashti serving Lady Saren. She will do anything that her lady tells her to do. She tricked Khan Tegas that she was Lady Saren because Lady Saren didn't want to marry Tegas. After Dashti saved the city's life, Tegas asked that will Dashti marry him( he didn't know that Dashti wasn't Lady Saren).

I will give this book 4 stars because I don't really like killing and violence. I recommend people who like violence and dying.

  7. I found Book of A Thousand Days a bit boring. In the first few chapters, nothing really happened. But near the end, things really picked up. All the action finally came, and the ending was great, even though I would of liked the action to come a bit earlier.
I give this book maybe a 3 out of 5. It is just over half, so it is quite even. I recommend this book to people who like reading a book in a journal format.

  8. To be honest, I actually didn't really enjoy most of Book of a Thousand days. My opinion is pretty much really similar to Amelia's but to be more precise, I loved to last 1/3 of the novel and did not enjoy the first 2/3 of the novel.
I found that around the first 2/3 of the novel quite was tedious and did not have many parts that were very significant to the book. However, I had a completely different reaction to the last 1/3 of the book because it was so appealing to me. I literally just never expected anything that happened which is what i really look for in novels. This was actually pretty disappointing though because the last part was so interesting and I needed to read more. I definitely would've liked the action to be more consistent and to have started earlier too.
Even though, I didn't like most of the novel because of the lack of events and excitement, I actually really liked the way the author made it as the diary of the maid because I really got to see the perspective of one of the main characters. Also, I really appreciated how there was pictures because it even gave me more of a chance to see how Dashti (the maid) looked at things. Another aspect of the book I really liked is how the author made everything so easy to understand yet really detailed and mature.
Lastly, I'd like to say that I'd rate this 3.5 stars because even though I didn't like most of the book, I really like the quality of writing the author shares with readers.

  9. I don't really like this book because it's pretty boring at first until the end of the story. I like " Happy Endings " and I will give this book 3 out of 5.

  10. This book is the most horribly pretentious thing I have ever read since Twilight. I found this book amazingly dull, packed with unnecessary details which detract from the story. I was disappointed; I expected it to be boring, but not nearly this boring. reading this felt like chewing on woodscrews coated with salt. There was not much variation, it was very monotonous, every single "day" seemed to be like the last. I rate this book a 2.5 out of 5 for effort, however this book is not all it is said to be.

  11. I thought this book was interesting though it was at first very slow hence the name Book of a Thousand Days. It made you feel as if you were also experiencing the thousand days with Dashti and Lady Saren.

I liked how the action picked up at the end but I am not telling the ending.

Overall, I would give this book 3/5.

  12. This book is quite boring and it really surprised me in the ending. Of course I'm not telling anyone anything (yet) but i agree with CB. It really does feel like you're experiencing the thousand days with them. In reality it felt like I've been reading the book longer than i normally would.
I wont say its that boring. The end was probably the best but it doesn't really make you want to read more. It's not something you would wait for.

  13. Book of a thousand days was a very good book! i thought at first it was a bit boring but 2/3 of the way it stared to get very interesting and exciting. I loved the action in the book it was good and I also loved how loyal Dashti is to Lady Saren to stick with her when they were put in the tower and was willing to die for her. What I liked what the author, Shannon Hale did was put the book in to Dashti's perspective and explain how Dashti feels through the tough times and she explains the people around her and how they feel in tough times and even good times. I also liked how the author put the book in a diary form i thought that was very interesting and a good idea. What I was not very fond of was the ending. Because the ending was the most exciting part for me and all of a sudden you get very in to it and BOOM! the book is done and you think, What? but what happens to Khan Tegus and Dashti after the marry!!!??? I thought that was a bit disappointing to end the book off. I would rate this book a 3.5/5 just because the beginning was boring and the ending was not that great. Overall it was a good book!

  14. I totally agree with Sienna. At least, the part where i wanted a sequel. I really want to know what happens after they marry. Does Lady Saren get married? I hope Shanon Hale writes a sequel.

  15. Everyone who read this book told me it was horribly boring. I thought it would be like that too. I was very disappointed, not because it was way more dull than everyone said, but it's that I totally disagree with everyone who said so. I liked it way more than the Plain Janes. Why?
Books written in diary form is one of my favorite. It was personal so it tells a lot more about that person. The beginning was very simple"My lady and I are being shut up in a tower for seven years." yet it still made me want to read more. I admit the beginning is kind of lame but just off the top of my head I could think of some questions about it like "Why are they being shut up in a tower for seven years?" "Who is the lady and who is "me"?" The entries in the book described a whole day or just an important event. I really felt like I was just sitting with the two people(Dashti and Lady Saren)in the book every second and watching and watching and watching.....
Once in a while something "big" compared to the simple days Dashti and Lady Saren had in the tower happened and it was also one of one of the reasons why I didn't lose the desire of wanting to read more.
The relationship in this book was definately sweet. There were some things and some people that kept Dashti, Lady Saren, and Khan Tegus apart but they still ended up together. I really liked the parts where it was just Dashti and Khan Tegus.(I actually want to read that part again.) I knew Dashti
and Khan Tegus were so cute together even I though I had never seen them.
They near ending part and the ending was so exciting that I wasn't watching TV while reading it even though I love the cartoon.(My little sister was watching Robin Hood.)Things turned out wrong but right again! I loved all the courage and struggling and romance and danger. The only thing I didn't like about this book was the part she was talking about her past. I know, but there's not a lot that's bad about this book to me. I give this book a 4.8 out of five and I recommand it.
